The Roman army was made up of foot soldiers called legions. There was about 5000 men in a legion.

A Roman legionary soldier was armed by metal armour to protected his upper body. His helmet stopped him getting blows to his head, or cuts to his neck.The large shield would protected him from spears being thrown.

Each legion carried a silver eagle. It stood for the power of the legion

A centurion was equivalent to a sergeant.
