ICT and Secondary Art - Planning and Assessing ICT in Art Teaching
| Module 5 | Contents |
|
The integration of ICT into practical work will entail not only careful planning but also the management of resources related to the areas of ICT experience and what they offer to teaching and learning in art.
The context for planning and integration needs to be based on your own situation, access to available resources (departmental and school), teacher and pupil confidence, and a desire to interact with the challenges that digital media offer.
In art, ICT can be used to:
- explore processes linked to art media such as fine art, graphic design, textiles, photography and 3D. (Some art activities require dedicated software - see software links in the resources module)
- Open-ended art programs provide a range of tools and a blank canvas to work on. Understanding the basic tools is essential; thus it is important to provide opportunities for pupils to explore and appreciate the range of tools available, and then to begin to focus the activities in relation to specific art processes. At this stage pupils should be encouraged to make comparisons between computer processes and traditional media.
- communicate and research - using CD-ROM and the Internet .
- design and create multimedia. This requires dedicated software (see the multimedia section in the generic resources module).
- present information in different forms and for different audiences (use presentation or web design software - see the presentation section in the generic resources module) .
The process of exploration is a progressive one, and in this context the computer can be used:
- as an initial stage in a design process for example to generate different ideas at speed;
- as an intermediate stage i.e. pupils' developmental ideas are imported into the computer, worked on and modified, the final outcome being work in traditional media informed by computer manipulations;
- to produce a final piece of work to be presented on screen or printed out.
Task 5
- Investigate sources (try starting with the Internet, or look at the publication Fusion: Art and IT in practice - further details in Other ICT Resources for Art) for:
- Exemplar Art Schemes of Work
- Sample Lesson Plans
- Sample Assessment Schemes for Lesson
- Samples of Students' work
- Assessments of Students' work.
- Outline your own scheme of work and plan a lesson.
- Collect samples of students' work and assess the ICT levels. We have given further guidelines on how you can do this in Module 5 of the Primary Core.
- Explore a particular activity in the short course for application in your class room.
- Plan and teach an aspect art using ICT with advisory teacher support.
- Publish a report of the activity and your evaluation on the web.
- Use the on-line discussion - how about discussing Integrating ICT into the Art Curriculum.
