Introduction

Computer art software imitates traditional tools and processes, but with the potential to create images that go beyond the replication of traditional tools. Students need to become familiar with the range of computer tools available and then apply this knowledge in a context that is related to the teaching and learning objectives of a particular project.

Ideas to help the evaluation of ICT resources:

  • is the program easy to use?
  • are the menu options and screen presentation clear?
  • is the program appropriate to the needs of all pupils?
  • does the program allow sufficient differentiation?
  • is the program open-ended, allowing fully creative activities and development?
  • can different input devices be accessed by the program?
  • does the program enable pupils meet the learning objectives set by the department?
  • will pupils of differing abilities find it interesting?
  • does the software enhance and extend existing image making opportunities?
  • is there a departmental policy for the storing of pupils' images?

Starting points for ICT work in art will grow from one or more of the following:

  • freehand work using a range of computer tools
  • images imported into the computer from a digital camera
  • original art work scanned into the computer and manipulated using computer tools
  • images 'grabbed' from CD-ROM or the Internet ( N.B. check copyright on all images)

The following links will take you to some on-line tutorials. You will also find similar kinds of help on most of the main art software sites.

Task 3

  1. ICT resource evaluation: choose a typical art project and identify which software you would use to meet particular teaching and learning objectives.

  2. Evaluate two art web sites and identify how you might incorporate their use in to your teaching.

  3. Use the First Class conferencing system to discuss how software can be used in relation to art processes.
