Lewisham LEA Out of Hours ICT Learning Project 2001

Evaluation Report 2001

This report relates to the evaluation of Phase II of Lewisham's Out of Hours ICT project which ran between Jan-April 2001.

The project originally arose as part of Lewisham's ICT Strategy for Learning, Learning to Participate (1999). The strategy highlighted the need to identify activities that would reduce the digital divide, develop a network of ICT access throughout the borough and assist schools so that they would be key players in helping to provide this increased access.

The borough recognised early on that although there was an ever widening access for pupils and parents to ICT in a number of locations outside of school, the most significant growth was in home ownership. BECTa quoted recent research that showed 65% of secondary and 55% of primary age children have home access to the Internet. However, this still left a significant number of pupils (and their parents), with limited access. This was a major factor in why the Education and Culture Directorate decided to continue to provide funds to 'kick-start' Out of Hours usage of schools ICT resources.

Following the successful outcome of Phase I of this project, additional funds were made available during Spring 2001 by the Education & Culture Directorate to assist schools to utilise their ICT resources outside of normal school hours.

The authors of this report would like to thank the schools and their staff for their work in making this project happen, the positive results that can be drawn are a tribute to their enthusiasm and hard work.

Our thanks are also extended to the parents and pupils who participated and who have allowed us to publish many of their comments.
