Site Validation
HTML and Accessibility Validation
This site should validate correctly using the W3C HTML validator. Most pages should pass the automatic tests provided by Cynthia Says for WAI Priority 1,2 & 3, but when tested by WebXact/Bobby it passes WCAG A and AAA, but fails for WCAG AA because there is a JavaScript routine to open and close the menu which the site editor believes is accessible via key or switch input, but for technical reasons falls foul of the strict requirements of this particular automatic test. The editor welcomes any comments from visitors on the manual and visual aspects of these requirements.
PS October 2007: I have changed the way the menu opens each main section, and now WebXact/Bobby seems to be happy with this as well.
CSS
This site uses two stylesheets, a simple one which is loaded first and which gives some minimal layout for Older browsers such as Netscape 4.x and Internet Explorer 4.x (even older browsers won't load the stylesheets at all). We then use the Mid Pass Filter technique to load in the main stylesheet which controls the layout and the menu.
JavaScript
The site uses a linked JavaScript file to run the menu display, and to 'obfuscate' the email addresses in an attempt at keeping SpamBots at bay. If you have disabled JavaScript or run a very old browser with no JavaScript, you receive a warning when the page contains email addresses that will not display. There is a site index which displays the entire menu contents regardless of the browser's CSS and JavaScript capability.
There are of course many other things one can do to improve accessibility, and the is always interested in hearing from people with views and ideas on this topic.
