FURTHER RESEARCH
Class 5B

Hearing what Sam King had to say made us interested in finding out more about some of the things he talked about.

We did some research into life in Britain in the Forties and into the country of Jamaica.

Here are some of our findings..............we all wrote something !

SCHOOLS
Schools were very different in those days. There were large classes and boys and girls were kept separate. There weren't many books or resources in the 1940s. There were very strict teachers and the punishment was to be hit with the cane. Another punishment was to get the dunce's hat on your head. The dunce's hat is a big hat which has a capital D on it. You had to stand in the corner for a certain amount of minutes.

SHOPS
People paid in shops with ration coupons and their money was Pounds and they had Shillings and the sign 'D' and you did not just help yourself in the shops you were served.
by Oliver

FOOD
Food was rationed, the prices were very cheap compared to ours. They had shillings you were given a ration book to get food, it had to last a long time
by Thomas

HOMES
The kitchens were the same but not a lot of electric in those days. Bathrooms were outside not in.
by Ryan

Homes would have tin baths that you would have to keep in the shed and bring it out at bath time. You would have to heat the water up on the stove in kettles and fill the bath up with the kettle.
by Jennifer

TRANSPORT
You would probably walk or get the bus or tram. Only rich people had cars.

JOBS
Jobs were the cause of the Windrush. There weren't enough people to do jobs so people came from other countries to help.
by Stacey

TOYS
Toys were made out wood and tin and they were often home made. They had some of the same toys that we have now like skipping ropes and yo yos.
by Sam

CLOTHES
Clothes were not manmade and they didn't have all new clothes like now. They had hand me downs.
by Sam

POLLUTION
Pollution was very bad because people burned coal and it would make the sky go black .
by Fiona

FEELINGS
People felt sad because of the war. Some people died but still people were happy because some survived plus their side won.
by Ersan

MONEY
They had different money. They had pounds, shillings and pence. (£sd) 20 shillings was worth £1.

ENTERTAINMENT
The radios were really big and heavy. If you were lucky you might go to the cinema. All the films were in black and white. Lots of people read books.
