MAYOR

OF

SOUTHWARK

When you were voted mayor of Southwark what did it feel like?
I felt very glad and proud It was a brilliant opportunity to be the first black mayor of Southwark.

How old were you when you became mayor?
I was 57.

What was it like to be the first black mayor of Southwark ?
It was not easy. People thought that black people could not be mayors. One day I was invited to seven different institutions and I had to speak five times. But on the whole I found it to be a pleasant experience.
