WINDRUSH

How long did it take to come on the Windrush?
It was most of May, I boarded the Windrush in 1948. Some of the people on the boat felt sick!
I remember seeing a man crying on the deck at about 6.15. because on the 6.00 news he had seen that it was saying that people like him couldn't land in England.

Was it a good experience to go on the S.S Windrush?
It was a reasonable experience. I wouldn't say nice. It was pleasant but very crowded. The condition was not bad but I didn't like mash potato and we had mash potato!

Did any family come with you?
No, my mother and father did not come. I came back in 1948.

What was people's attitude to you when you came to England?
At first people were very nice to me. People were very helpful, they needed people to come and rebuild Britain. Overall I was treated reasonably.
