The Story of our Project
by Debbie, Lily and Emma

Why did we choose the Windrush ?

We chose it because we noticed a road called Windrush Lane in Forest Hill and we thought of Black History Month (October 2000). So we traced the name back to the time of the Windrush (around 1949). It traced back to the SS Empire Windrush. The SS Empire Windrush was used by the British to bring back Jamaican men to rebuild Britain after the war because there weren't enough young men to help. One person who is famous for coming on the Windrush is Mr. Sam King, who later became the first black Mayor of Southwark. Sam King lived at one time in Brockley, Lewisham.
